Now who doesn’t know that pint-sized, blood thirsty, serial-killing voodoo doll called Chucky that began his rampage in horror film history from 1988 right up to this very day. That doll is 29 years old today, still slashing and gnashing with the best and worst of them. Like him or revile him as another dumb doll movie, he’s right up there on the ranks of those legendary killers like Freddy Krueger (Nightmare on Elmstreet), Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th), Ghostface, Leatherface, Pinhead and Michael Myers ─ the bogeyman of John Carpenter’s Halloween.
“Born” in 1988 in Child’s Play, Chucky was a “Good Guy” doll that got inhabited by the vengeful spirit of a dying, voodoo-practising serial killer who was shot by the police while on the run, hiding in a toy shop. The serial killer dies but the next day, the toy gets sold to a child who names him Chucky, and the rest as they say, is well, …child’s play for the franchise at the box office.
