Since Black Cats are all the rage this season, so will our biscuits be!
Since Black Cats are all the rage this season, so will our biscuits be!

This month we go with Black Cats and Pumpkins. Well, what’s Halloween without the Treat or Treating eh? We’ve whipped up three recipes to haunt your imagination for the season: super crunchy, unsugared Charcoal Black Cats and Pumpkin-Spice cookies for your four-legged furries (yes, we’re talking about those always-hungry-hairy-ghouls); and yummy chocolate-covered cookies for your friends, family, and of course, yourself.

The flaxseed features strongly here ─ not only are they filled with beneficial Omega-3 essential fatty acids and much-needed fiber, they are also the secret ingredient behind the hard and super crunchiness of the biscuits ─ just the way them pooches like it.

For the Pooches

CHARCOAL BISCUITS RECIPE

Ingredients:

Here's the rolled out dough embedded with the appropriate cookie cutter.
Here’s the rolled out dough embedded with the appropriate cookie cutter.
  • 1 cup wheat flour
  • 1 cup oat flour
  • 1 cup crushed flaxseed
  • 1 tbsp activated charcoal powder
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • A pinch of salt (optional)
  • 1/2 cup very warm water

Method:

Combine all dry ingredients and then add in the water. Mix it well until everything is properly incorporated.

Dough should be fairly dry and crumbly however if it’s coming apart too much, then just add in a little bit more water until it is just about right.

Lotsa cats.
Lotsa cut-out cats. The orange speckles are the milled flaxseeds.

Dust the counter with some flour and then roll out dough to an even thickness of about 1/2 centimeter and then cut out the shapes with cookie cutters of your choice. Place the cookies on a non-stick pan or on a baking sheet.

Bake it in a pre-heated oven at 180 degrees Celcius for about 10 minutes. Cooking times may vary because every oven is different.

If you would like the cookies to be very crunchy, turn down the heat to the lowest-possible setting after it is done baking.

The secret behind the black: activated charcoal. You can buy these ready-made in jars in baking shops or simply crush some charcoal pills.

Let it sit in there for about an hour. When it’s done, let cookies cool completely before storing them away.

Keep in air-tight container and in a cool dry place. Shelf life is 2 to 3 weeks without refrigeration. 1 month or longer in refrigerator.

Ingredients:

The Pumpkin-Spice and Flaxseed dough all nicely flattened with appropriate cookie cutter.

  • 1 cup wheat flour
  • 1 cup oat flour
  • 1 cup crushed flaxseed
  • 1 cup pureed pumpkin
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1/4 very warm water

Method:

Combine all dry ingredients and then mix in the pureed pumpkin.

Add in a tablespoon of water at a time until dough comes together nicely.

It should be slightly sticky and stretchy. If it gets too wet, add in more flour a little bit at a time until you achieve the correct consistency. Dust the counter with some flour and then roll out dough with a cling wrap on top of it so that the rolling pin does not stick to the dough. Roll it out to an even thickness of about 1/2 centimeter and then cut out the shapes with cookie cutters of your choice. Place the cookies on a non-stick pan or on a baking sheet.

For the Chocolate Dipping:

Melted chocolate.
Melted chocolate.

We added chocolate dipping just for some wicked fun. Melt cooking chocolate in a bowl over boiling hot water, dip in the biscuits to coat or if you’re into painting in faces like we did, use a toothpick or a satay stick and let your creativity take over!

Keep the finished product in the refrigerator or bag them as gifts for your friends.

Add a creative touch to your cookie gift bag by painting on some chocolate faces!
